Miami Film Festival is proud to announce the first two titles of the GEMS line-up, and both bring along with them a heavy dose of rock n’ roll. First up: Gimme Danger, directed by Jim Jarmusch. This in-depth documentary relives Iggy Pop’s tumultuous early performances as a member of The Stooges, along with his tendencies to self-destruction and multiple comebacks. Featuring never-before-seen footage, this Florida Premiere is a must for music enthusiasts.
Also premiering at GEMS is Paul Dugdale’s The Rolling Stones Olé Olé Olé: A Trip Across Latin America, which follows the legendary band on their 2016 South American tour. Olé Olé Olé should prove to be of particular interest to Miami audiences, as a large portion of the documentary focuses on the Stones’ impending concert in Cuba, and whether or not they’ll be able to make it happen. Of course, make it happen they did, thrilling Cuban audiences and making rock and roll history.
Miami Film Festival has a long history of screening acclaimed music documentaries as part of the Reel Music series, with some notable rock docs popping up over the past six years. Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck – Last year the Festival sold out two screenings of Brett Morgan’s documentary about the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The film draws upon personal archives of art, music and never-before-seen home movies interwoven with candid interviews with his closest friends and family. His daughter Frances Bean Cobain serves as executive producer.
Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon — Comedian Mike Myers’ directorial debut, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, had its Florida Premiere at the Miami Film Festival in 2014, with the film’s fascinating subject in attendance. Supermensch revolves around the illustrious career of music manager Shep Gordon, who managed stars such as Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, and Teddy Pendergrass.
Twenty Feet From Stardom – Our crowd-pleasing 2013 Opening Night Film, Twenty Feet From Stardom shines a light on the unsung heroes of rock n’ roll: the backup singers. Featuring interviews from musicians such as Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Stevie Wonder.
The Beatles on Record – Directed by Grammy Award-winning director Bob Smeaton, this 2010 Festival selection charts The Beatles’ extraordinary recording journey, revealing how they became one of the most celebrated bands of the 20th century.
