MIFF 2011 Juror Lucas Leyva has just been named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film for 2012 along with fellow Miami-native director, writer, and actress Jillian Mayer. Leyva is the founder and Minister of the Interior of the Borscht Film Festival, a quasi-yearly event held at iconic Miami venues that showcases films created by emerging regional filmmakers telling Miami stories.  In 2010, he directed the avant-garde musical “Mrs. Ms” as part of the Here and Now Festival at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, FL and directed the short film titles “Day N Night Out” by acclaimed playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Earlier this year, Leyva and Mayer’s short “Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke” screened at Sundance and SXSW.
