Every year, Miami Film Festival welcomes a steady stream of special guests, all of whom add a certain zest to Festival screenings and events. At the recent Festival back in March, there was one guest in particular that stood out: Javier Camara. The star of Pedro Almodovar films such as Talk to Her, Bad Education and I’m So Excited, the Spanish icon came to the Festival to promote his latest film For Your Own Good, an uproarious Spanish comedy that follows three overprotective fathers as they navigate the hellish ordeal of watching their teenage daughters date.

Camara, who has been in the business for nearly 30 years, charmed Festival audiences at our Awards Night screening of For Your Own Good as he took the stage alongside director Carlos Theron to discuss the film. Following the film, he made his way over to Centro Cultural Espanol for the El Coto de Rioja Awards Night Party, where he felt right at home as he partied under the stars in celebration of another memorable edition of Miami Film Festival.

Just the year prior, the Festival celebrated the U.S. Premiere of a Camara-led picture that will be remembered as one of the biggest Spanish hits that year: Truman.

Co-starring Camara and The Secret in Their Eyes’ Ricardo Darin, Truman is a heartbreaking and unexpectedly humorous new film from director Cesc Gay.  Julián (Darin) receives an unplanned visit from an old friend, Tomás (Cámara), who now lives overseas. The two men, along with Truman, Julián’s faithful dog, will share four intensely emotional and surprising days as they grapple with sobering and inevitable life decisions.

The film swept the 2016 Goya Awards, taking home awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Lead actor, and Best Supporting Actor for Camara. And now, Miami audiences who missed the sold-out Festival screening back in 2016 can see the film at MDC’s Tower Theater where it’ll play for the next week.
