As the art world flocks in for Art Basel, Miami is also in the midst of its own homegrown slate of satellite and ancillary art events. Film fans, however, are not left in the gallery install dust. Art Basel’s Film and Sound Program is the perfect chance to enjoy Basel, Miami, and film in one beautiful outdoor setting.
This morning, the New World Center hosted a talk with David Gryn, curator of the Film and Sound Program. The talk explored the impact of film and sound art on us, as individuals and as a community. Moderated by local curator and filmmaker Dennis Scholl, the talk featured three visiting sound artists – Mariele Neudecker, Alice Jacobs, and Sophie Alsbo – along with one of Miami’s most compelling talents, artist and filmmaker Jillian Mayer.
Gryn, Director of Daata Editions and Artprojx London, has curated over 50 short films and sound works on the title theme “Our Hidden Futures.” Running nightly from Dec 2-6 at SoundScape Park, each evening will begin with a sound work followed by short films projected on the beautiful 7,000 square foot wall outside the New World Center. This free event, open to the public, is a great way for art connoisseurs, gallerists, artists, and our hardworking locals to relax each night. Bring a blanket or arm chair to enjoy the park’s lawn and this fall-ish weather.
“Our Hidden Futures” kicks off this evening, Dec 2, at 6pm with sound work by Neudecker: Figure of 8 (Rainforest, Ecuador, sound recorded at height: 1.39m, 9.78m, 22.59m, 30.79m and 37.26m), followed by the short film programs “Fairy Doll” at 8pm and “Speak Easy” at 9pm.
