The old adage is that if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. But what, exactly, does it take to make it in New York? And what does the attempt take out of you? Siudy Between Worlds, a riveting documentary about the Miami-based Siudy Flamenco Dance Theater mounting a ten-week stage run in the Big Apple, takes viewers on that journey with astounding clarity and detail.
The dream is simple enough: Venezuelan-born flamenco prodigy Siudy Garrido and her dance troupe want to bring their production "Entre Mundos" ("Between Worlds") to a famed midtown New York stage and sustain a successful multi-month run. But the process of making that dream a reality -- from securing funding and travel, to generating creative grassroots publicity (forming a flash mob near Times Square in one unforgettable sequence), to attracting the attention of national press – is a grueling, often soul-crushing odyssey not for the faint of heart. When the troupe finally attracts the attention of the New York Times dance critic, will the coverage launch them to new heights or sink their fledgling production?
Colored throughout with breathtaking flamenco sequences, Siudy Between Worlds is a visually beautiful and stirring homage to the eponymous dancer and her troupe. But it is also a chronicle of grit; an unsentimental look at what one endures when their dream seemingly dies; and a roadmap to getting up, and starting over.
