Under the Same Sun (Bajo el mismo sol)

La Española, 1819. In the laboratory of the colonial Caribbean, three displaced souls attempt a surreal feat of industry: establishing a silk factory in the heart of a devouring jungle. Lázaro (David Castillo) is a hesitant Spanish heir suffocating under the legacy of his dead father; Mei (Valentina Shen Wu) is a Chinese weaver whose world is defined by thread; and Baptiste (Jean Jean) is a Haitian living as a hermit in the ruins of a colonial estate. Director Ulises Porra proposes an inverse Fitzcarraldo-style adventure that strips its characters of social hierarchy, forcing a fragile, makeshift family to form in the wilderness.
Under the Same Sun premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
