The Gravedigger’s Wife

Directed by Khadar Ayderus Ahmed
Somalia, Finland, Germany, France
2021
82 mins

Each day, Guled (Omar Abdi) and his fellow co-workers wait outside hospitals for new corpses. Making money off the dead is a necessity for Guled not only to sustain his family’s livelihood but also to help pay for his wife’s kidney surgery so she won’t die.

Living on the outskirts of Djibouti City with their teenage son, Mahad, Guled rushes home every night to take care of his wife, Nasra, played by Somali-Canadian model Yasmin Warsame.

In this beautiful love story, Finnish-Somali director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed captures the lengths love can reach in this poetically radiant film.
