Neon Reef: Advocacy, Reef Resilience, and the Power of Documentary Film

60 mins

Dive beneath the surface of Miami Beach - literally and creatively. Join the filmmakers and community voices behind Neon Reef, a new documentary exploring coral reef preservation, for a lively conversation touching on climate urgency and queer-led environmental action right here in Miami Beach. Moderated by Emmy-winning journalist and ocean advocate Louis Aguirre, film director Alex Mitow will be joined by film subjects and reef ringleaders Patrick Breshike and David Grieser, coral scientist Kevin Wong, and Miami Beach Commissioner Laura Dominguez. Together, they’ll unpack how documentary film can function as community advocacy, how personal identity shapes environmental storytelling, and why Miami’s reefs are at a critical turning point. This fun, salon-style conversation offers a sneak peek into the themes behind the film, ahead of its Miami Film Festival premiere the following Saturday, April 18, at Silverspot Cinema.
