“[T]here is no gate, no lock, no bolt,” Virginia Woolfe wrote in A Room of One’s Own, “that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” But what if your mind is so untethered and unruly you find yourself longing for the gate, for the lock, for the bolt? This is the conundrum N. faces. He is paralyzed by thoughts, by indecision, by a paradox of choice that makes it feel as if there is no choice at all.
