In 1972, Cuba’s regime sought to gift an island in its archipelago to East German dictator Erich Honecker, naming it after Ernst Thälmann, politician, revolutionary, and one-time leader of the Communist Party of Germany. Comandante Fritz seizes upon this obscure historical anecdote as the basis for an old-school espionage thriller set in the perilous atmosphere of a Caribbean Cold War – yet with a fully satirical twist. On the day of the dedication ceremony, the CIA plans to assassinate Fidel Castro, while the German Democratic Republic dispatches a Stasi team to thwart the plot.
The story unfolds in a Havana nostalgic for the glory days of its vibrant nightlife yet forced to confront the Castro-era debacle – presented as an anthology of absurdity and intolerance.
