Calle Cuba

Directed by Vanessa Batista
Chile, Cuba, Mexico
2026
93 mins

Calle Cuba is an emblematic street in the island nation’s Old Havana municipality, as well as the title of this unusual documentary, in which several longtime residents of the area perform their own lives before the cameras with the naturalness of seasoned actors. All of them try to find the hope that has been promised to them, only to see it dissipate with no solution in sight. Complaints and protests abound, silenced by resignation. Escaping the anguish of the cursed island is one possible solution, yet the paths of flight are complex. The promise of a better life may lie in crossing the dangerous Darién jungle, embarking on the uncertain journey to Russia, or obtaining a visa by any means necessary.
