Blue Heron

90 mins

In the late 1990s, a family of six settles into its new home on Vancouver Island. The fresh start is interrupted by the increasingly dangerous behavior of Jeremy, the family’s oldest child, as the watchful youngest, Sasha, tries to reconcile the languid joys of an endless summer with the explosive moments that shape it.

Winner of the Best Canadian Discovery Award at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, director Sophy Romvari’s debut feature evokes shades of Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun in this extraordinary meditation on memory and the distance between understanding and experience. With a patient sensibility and lyrical touch, Romvari has crafted a film that demonstrates how the act of creating cinema can serve as its own form of therapy.
