One of the major works of US independent cinema in the 1990s, Before Sunrise stars Ethan Hawke and MFF42 special guest Julie Delpy as two twenty something strangers on a train – him a slick American tourist nearing the final stop on his trip, her a French art student returning to Paris to complete her graduate studies at The Sorbonne – who spontaneously decide to spend the evening together walking and talking (and talking some more) across Vienna.
Packed tight with sharp and witty dialogue and fueled by Hawke and Delpy's irresistible chemistry, Before Sunrise served as the first chapter in Richard Linklater’s unexpected, but beloved film trilogy – and also the catalyst for Delpy and Hawke to become successful writer-directors in their own right.
