The Sense of Place series are verité documentaries made in Miami in the 1980s. Director Mel Kiser and Librarian Katharine Labuda will present newly digitized copies made from tapes donated to the Miami-Dade Public Library System.

Come early for croquetas and connection!

Connect with others who love film, culture, history and our Magic City just as much as you do! We’re partnering with We Met in Miami to foster connection and community at this event. Arrive at 11 a.m. to mingle over croquetas, pastelitos and Cuban coffee, and join in on a paired icebreaker moment shortly before the film screening begins. 

We Met in Miami is a nonprofit event series facilitating love and friendship for adults 21+ through community service, civic engagement and the arts.

Last Night at the S&S Diner

Miami film-makers Mel Kiser and Corky Irick present a colorful document of a famous Miami diner in its fiftieth year of business. Owners Charlie and Jean Cavalaris, their staff and customers tell why much of Miami loves the S&S Diner.

Calling Miami Home

Some long time Miami residents reflect on the impact of uncontrolled development in South Florida. Not only can the natural environment be ruined, but continual redevelopment prevents the permanence necessary to cultivate a sense of place. Those interviewed are: Al Rantel, Art Simon, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, Sgt. Lee Haddon, Beth Dunlop, and Arva Moore Parks.
