In the studio of a well-known director, women are auditioning for the role of Scheherazade in A Thousand and One Nights. Unfolding entirely within the confines of an audition room, the women perform before an unseen director, doing their best to capitulate to his demands and increasingly intrusive line of questioning. And they gradually realize that he has more in mind than just casting a leading role.
An official film festival selection at Berlin, AFI and Thessaloniki, Iranian American filmmaker Mehrnoush Alia filmed 1001 Frames without a permit in Iran and based on true stories, confronting the horrors of the casting couch, abuse of power, and the exploitation of women in this claustrophobic experimental thriller.
