Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the woods…
Queen of Bones is set in the 1930s, but the darkness this feature bridging the gap between folk horror and gothic dread explores is timeless. Life in the Oregon backwoods is no picnic for teen twins Lillian (Julia Butters) and Samuel (Jacob Tremblay): their mom died in childbirth, their religious zealot father (Martin Freeman) isn’t exactly a teddy bear, and aspiring stepmother Ida (Taylor Schilling) sees them as disposable at best.
Things seem pretty bleak until the pair find a book of pagan spells in a trunk that belonged to their dead mother. The question becomes, at what cost come empowerment and liberation?
