New Dawn: How Indie Producers Will Save Entertainment (Diliana Alexander Masterclass)

Diliana Alexander returns to Miami Film Festival to give another popular masterclass, presented in association with FilmGate Miami.

What is an independent producer's best skill? Surviving and thriving in the harshest of conditions. Even though big budgets are nice, these days we are in the unique position of capitalizing on the DIY nature of indie production, especially when we create outside of the system and in regional environments. In a socially distanced world, where large crews and big budgets are not always feasible, it's our time to shine!

Olmo Figueredo is one of the industry’s most talented indie producers and we will discuss how to rise from the ashes and be successful in the new now. When distribution pipelines are narrower than ever, the film festival circuit has gone hybrid, and we are rebuilding the independent media system, what does it take to build a successful independent local production company with wide global reach? We will share practical, actionable tips for different stages of production and focus on the creative and business side of indie producing.

From concept development, to aligning with the right buyer, to bringing on local producers and crew, and finding the right platform, we will use The Miramar Murders: The State vs Pablo Ibar as a case study.

Diliana Alexander (moderator) is an award-winning traditional and interactive storytelling producer/director, who hails from Toronto, Canada and now lives in Miami, Florida. She is the co-founder of FilmGate Miami and FilmGate Interactive, as well as the Downtown Media Center. Diliana is focused on how new technology intersects with art to shape the stories of the future and is the head programmer of FilmGate Interactive, which takes place in early December in Downtown Miami.
