Rock climbing documentary ‘Free Solo’ is a thrilling big-screen experience

October 24th, 2018|

To watch Free Solo is to willingly thrust yourself into a vertiginous, panic-inducing, heart-palpitating setting for nearly two hours. October 8th, 2018|

One of the finest actors of her generation, Spain’s Bárbara Lennie achieved international attention when she played a young filmmaker questing to capture the essence of a small town in Montxo Armendáriz’s Obaba (2005), and in the process discovered herself. That role provided a neatly microcosmic glimpse of the complex screen persona that Lennie would construct in the array of dazzling performances that have followed since. Still from Petra Her next major breakthrough came [...]

The Case for Champions and Capernaum

October 1st, 2018|

Today is the deadline for nations to submit films to the Oscars for consideration as the Best Foreign Language Film of 2018. Last year, Chile (for the first time) won the annual global honor, and at this year’s fifth annual Miami Film Festival GEMS, you can see nine of this year’s strongest contenders. Which country should/will succeed Chile for the crown? (No country has won the award in successive years since Denmark did it in [...]
