Imagine you have a dream to create your own episodic series. You enter a three minute pitch video and win the $25,000 top prize! That’s what happened last year to Miami’s Haitian-American filmmakers, actors and roommates Edson Jean and Joshua Jean-Baptiste. In October 2017, Edson and Joshua joined Festival director Jaie Lapante to discuss the journey from shooting no-budget test-episodes to working on a new Miami set project in the community that inspired them.
All of their hard work has led up to GROWN, a scripted comedy series streaming this month on Complex. In the series, both Jean-Baptiste and Jean star as two dichotomous twenty-something cousins who are forced to cohabitate. The series delivers the authentic perspective of two Haitian-Americans and is set in the diverse backdrop of inner city Miami.
Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival, Adaptive Studios and Complex Networks team up on Tuesday, June 5th for a special screening of the first two episodes of GROWN at MDC’s Tower Theater Miami, followed by a panel and Q&A session and a reception. GROWN creators and stars Joshua Jean-Baptiste and Edson Jean will be in attendance.
After the death of his mother, Josh, a digitally dependent Haitian-American, is forced to live with his promiscuous and problematic cousin, Wes. A struggling actor who scrambles to make a living. He pulls Josh into a series of misadventures consisting of women, self-discovery, and social media relevance. This is a story of two fatherless men blindly leading each other to discover what it means to grow up– all under the backdrop of Miami’s vibrant, lesser known communities.
