Tigre (Argentina) Directed by Silvina Schnicer and Ulises Porra Guardiola, produced by Pucará Cine
It’s summer, the heat is stifling.Rina, a 65 years old woman, returns to her old house in the middle of the Tigre Delta isles, a labyrinth of rivers and thick jungles. The islanders say that you can suffer the “mal del sauce” (willow malady), a sort of pleasure or lethargy that traps you to daze and neutralizes your ability to react. Humidity and vegetation invaded the house completely: Rina abandoned it years ago. Nevertheless, the memories of a past of splendour shine through. Rina wants to recover her house and, in this way, recommence the relationship with her son. But Facundo is interested in selling the house to pay his debts.Her friend Elena, the former maid Ana Laura and their children, join Rina. During a few days the house is inhabited by a disparate group of people that fill the place with an unusual and increasing noise. The Delta, enveloping, penetrates and disturbs them. A teenager seduces an older woman and, when he can have her, decides to sleep with her daughter instead. Two teens have sex in a bathroom. A group of islander children goes across the island freely , while one nails a spear through the reeds of the hut. A man suffers the advance of shingles under his skin; two mothers toast in the darkness, get drunk and promise themselves that they will learn how to be alone. The Tigre caught them all, now it’s late.
Silvina Schnicer (Director of TIGRE)
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied Social Communication at the University of Buenos Aires.She worked in the art department of several films and advertisements. She is the co-writer and co-director of the short film “LA BICHA”, winner of the National Arts Fund prize. Her script “TIGRE” was selected to be part of the Casa América residency in Madrid. The project won the INCAA Raymundo Gleyzer development prize and Visions Sud Est Production Fund. Recently, she was selected and participated of the Fundación Carolina residency with her second film script project, “LA QUINTA”. “TIGRE” is her film debut project.
Ulises Porra Guardiola (Director of TIGRE)
Born in Barcelona, Spain. He lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Painter and writer, studied Philosophy at the University of Barcelona. He worked as a scenographic builder in various films and advertisements. He was Assistant Director of the feature film “Zanjas” by Francisco Paparella (in post production).He co-wrote and co-directed the short film “LA BICHA”, winner of the National Arts Fund prize.He was recently participated of the Fundación Carolina residency with his second fiction feature film script, “LOS SUCIOS”. “TIGRE” will be his first feature film project as co-director.
Barbara Sarasola-Day (Producer of TIGRE)
Born in Argentina in 1976. She studied Communications at the University of Buenos Aires and Cinema in specialized courses in London, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. She graduated from EAVE Producer´s Workshop in 2015. In 2011, together with Federico Eibuszyc, they created PUCARA CINE. With the company they produced DESHORA by Barbara Sarasola-Day (2013-premiered in 63 Berlinale, Panorama), EL MOVIMIENTO by Benjamin Naishtat (2015- Locarno, Cineasti del Presente), in coproduction with Julia Rotondi and Mariano Luque they coproduced OTRA MADRE (2017- Rotterdam). PUCARA CINE is on a financing stage with their project ROJO by Benjamin Naishtat (INCAA, CNC, ANCINE-INCAA, Netherlands Film Fond+Hubert Bals Fund, Hubert Bals Fund+Europe, World Cinema Fund, NRW, Ibermedia, EAVE); developing YACUIBA by Sarasola-Day and post producing LOS CORROBORADORES by Luis Bernardez and TIGRE by Silvina Schnicer and Ulises Porra (INCAA, Fundación Carolina-Casa América and Visions Sud).
Eugenia (Bolivia), directed by Martin Boulocq, produced by CQ Films
Eugenia has decided to separate from her husband, leave her job and move to her father’s house in another city. Predisposed to new experiences, she wants to start a different life. As time goes by she gets disappointed with her surrounding environment until one day she receives a notice that will put her long-awaited independence at risk.
Martín Boulocq (Director, Producer of EUGENIA)
Martín Boulocq born in Cochabamba, Bolivia. At 25 years old he directed The most beautiful and my very best years, premiered at AFI, showed at Locarno, San Sebastian and others festivals getting International awards. His second feature film, Los Viejos was premiered at Busan and winner Best film at Antofagasta. His producing credits include “San antonio”, “Rojo, Amarillo y Verde” and “El olor de tu ausencia”.
Los debiles (Mexico), directed by Raul Rico and Eduardo Giralt Brun, produced by Mendicante
Victor has a scuffle with a thirteen-year-old boy who is part of a gang. Hours later he finds his beloved dogs murdered. He gets his gun and begins a journey on board his pick-up truck on a path that will take him across the hostile land of Sinaloa. In his search for clues he will meet disturbing and eccentric characters who may or may not tell the truth about the whereabouts of the young criminal. At the end of his journey he will come to terms with his weakness and will learn to bear the injustice just as he bears the sun on the heat of the day.
Eduardo Giralt Brun (Director, Producer of LOS DEBILES)
Born in Miami, he was raised in Caracas by a Uruguayan mother and a Cuban father. He learned about cinema by watching movies with his maternal grandfather in Montevideo and Brazilian soap operas with his paternal grandmother in Miami. He then earned his BFA at the SMFA – Tufts University where he worked as a teaching assistant to Fernando Birri and Jeff Silva. He moved to Uruguay to write his grandfather’s memoirs while working in a bar, after Uruguay he migrated to Mexico, where he worked with director Julio Hernández Cordón on his feature film “Te Prometo Anarquía” and directed a documentary about artist Vicente Rojo. He has a dog named Maya and is currently in development of a new film.
Raul Rico (Director, Producer of LOS DEBILES)
Raul Rico studied Business Administration at ITESM and a specialty in International Business at the Catholic University of Lyon. He did marketing at Unilever for LatAm for four years. As a video artist, he has exhibited his work in cultural spaces such as the Open Studio by SOMA Summer, the Acme Hall and the exhibition La Rabia Fundadora, in Lima, Peru, with the play “Dos Hermanos Tirando Piedras al Agua”. His feature film, “Night of Resurrections” (2014), was part of the Official Selection of RMFF.
Camocim (Brazil), directed by Quentin Delaroche, produced by Ponte Produções
Every four years, the calm and peacefull Camocim de São Félix, a small town in Pernambuco (Brazil), is shaken, revealing an outpouring of joy, anger, hope and disappointment. During the municipal political campaign, the city splits into two, and everything seems to orbit around politics. In the middle of this political market, Mayara, 23, tries to make a “clean” campaign to elect his candidate and friend Cesar.
Quentin Delaroche (Director of CAMOCIM)
Quentin Delaroche was born in Le Mans (France) and lives in Brazil for 3 years. Hes graduated in social communication and has a master’s degree in film studies at Paris 7 Diderot University. In his first film, “Nomad’s Land” (52′), he followed a circus company performing in France, watching the transformation of the places with the passage of the troupe. In December 2016, he completed the feature documentary “Marie, the cancer temer” (53′), a portrait of a young mother suffering from a cancer that decides to fight the disease to make memories with her children. The film was bought by French public television France 3. “Camocim” is his third film. Quentin also worked as an editor, camera operator and sound operator for documentaries, short films and visual creations for the theater.
Dora Amorim is a partner in Ponte Produções and works as film producer since 2010. Currently, she is the Production Coordinator of the festival Janela Internacional de Cinema do Recife – one of the most acknowledge festivals in Brazil. She also works with Emilie Lesclaux and Kleber Mendonça Filho in Cinemascópio and worked as the executive producer of AQUARIUS (in competition at the 2016 Cannes Official Selection), directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
Thais Vidal works as a film producer since 2010 and is also a researcher and partner in Ponte Produções. In 2013, she directed her first documentary FORA DE ORDEM exhibited within The Playable City initiative – a program that brought together artists and producers in Bristol (UK). She is the executive producer and artistic director of the project Base Apresenta and Mov – International Festival of University Films of Pernambuco, which in 2016 has reached its third edition. She also investigates the relationship between cinema and city analyzing public policies and economy.
Dana Keith is founder and director of the Miami Beach Film Society and Cinematheque. He has degrees in film and fine art from University of California, Santa Barbara, and lived in Europe for ten years obtaining the base of a collection, which is now the MBC Archive of memorabilia, considered one of the finest collections of its type in the world.
Molly O’Keefe is the Director of Scripted Programs at the Tribeca Film Institute (TFI). At TFI she is point on six scripted funds, the TFI Network Market, the Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program and spearheaded the first Sloan Series workshop. Prior to joining TFI, Molly was the Director of Development and Production at Sundance Productions where she developed series for CNN, FX, HBO, Ovation, EPIX, Sony and Paramount. During her time at Sundance she produced Isabella Rosselini’s Green Porno Live which premiered at the San Francisco Film Festival and then on the Ovation network. Before returning to New York, she worked for Ben Stiller’s Los-Angeles-based Red Hour Films and produced Roger Kumble’s critically acclaimed play Girls Talk starring Brooke Shields and Constance Zimmer in West Hollywood. She’s a graduate of Emerson College.
Diana Sánchez is IFF Panama’s artistic director and since the year 2002, the well-known Ibero-American film curator at the Toronto International Film Festival. With a Masters’ Degree in Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto, Sánchez has promoted Ibero-American cinema in many latitudes. She created Miami’s Encuentros program in 2003 in collaboration with the Festival, and programmed it for many years afterwards, stepping down from her role as programmer of Miami Encuentros in 2015.
